Had my first bicycle accident last night, very minor, more of a close call really. There was a cab sitting at the red light ahead of me and as I coasted up to stop on his right side, the passenger flung open the door, catching me in the hand and handlebars. It brought me to a stop and definitely scared the shit out of both of us, but no real injuries.

The passenger had probably gotten tired of watching the meter turn at the long red light and decided to walk the rest of the way home. I've done that before. He apologized profusely, but I assured him it was I was fine and it wasn't a problem. They were probably exchanging money as I came up behind them, so they couldn't have seen me coming and the cab was too dark for me to see any activity inside, so it was just one of those things.

My hand hurt like hell for the next ten minutes of my ride, but yelling "Fuck!" over and over helped greatly and by the time I got home I barely noticed it. Fortunately, I was slowing to a stop prior to the collision, so my speed was pretty low.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Uhmm...you do know that what you did was illegal and one of the most popular ways of getting killed on a bike?

Oh, really? Do tell.

Well, basically bicycles have most of the rights of a pedestrian, but all the responsibilities of a car. So, just as it'd be illegal for another car to try and squeeze by another one in the same lane...so it is with a bike. (or on the shoulder).

And for whatever reason, drivers are not prone to see people on bikes. The maneuver you did is particular ly hard to see on the passenger side. Cyclists run into opening car doors all the time, cuz we just aren't seen. Doing what you did is a great way to be killed be either somone opening the door when you're moving @ high speed or when they make a right on red in front of you (or just switch lanes).

Be careful dude. You have to be even more defensive while riding your bike. even if you have the right of way, the car's driver is going to be the reading the obituaries.

I guess you don't have bike lanes where you come from.

There's a few bike lanes, but not what I'd like! And only on established bike routes.

Well, I guess you had the right of way then. Glad you survived.
