On a lark, we watched the first episode of Eastwick last night and were very pleasantly surprised. Although based on John Updike's The Witches of Eastwick (and the movie of the same name), the show feels more like the film Practical Magic with a dose of Desperate Housewives and just a sprinkle of Charmed.

Unlike in the novel, our three witches are not a coven. In fact they don't seem to have ever dabbled at all in the occult when their powers begin to manifest, which just happens to be the very same day that the mysterious and seductive millionaire Darryl Van Horne arrives in town. Of course, if you know the story at all, you know who he is. Paul Gross, the Canadian Mountie from Due South, plays Darryl in a way that reminds me a lot of John Barrowman's Captain Jack on Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Our three witches: Roxanne is a sculptress and single mother who begins seeing flashes of the future. She's played by Rebecca Romijn, who I'm liking here a lot better than I did in Ugly Betty. Joanna is a reporter struggling with an unrequited crush and a sexist boss, two problems quickly resolved when she people suddenly become very willing to do whatever she tells them. She's played by Lindsay Price, who I used to like on the original Beverly Hills 90210, but haven't really seen since. And Kat is a nurse with a deadbeat jerk of a husband (Jon Bernthal from The Class!). She seems to have control over the forces of nature. She's played by Jaime Ray Newman, who apparently is apparently from the show Eureka.

I found the episode well written, confidently efficient at introducing the characters and themes, and, most importantly, very entertaining. I suspect the show has a lot of potential, assuming they take their time with the big story and find interesting ways to explore their powers.
