I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike....
Oh my god, I love my new bicycle! I left work early yesterday to go pick it up. As soon as I saw it, sitting in the back of the store, my heart started pounding. It's sooo pretty. Dark orange brushed metal, gorgeous curves, white walls, leather saddle and leather grips, tall as all get out. I should have some pictures up friday.

I handed over my driver's license and took it for a test drive down the sidewalk and into a nearby bus parking lot. It felt great. Just like they say, riding a bike came right back to me. You just pedal and go and for some crazy reason you don't fall over.

But of course, there's riding a bike and there's riding a bike on busy city streets during rush hour. I got a little frightened whenever an SUV would pass me, especially in South Philly. A few times, I found myself sitting stuck in traffic with the cars for a minute or two before I remembered I was on a bicycle and could just hop onto the sidewalk until I got around the guy who couldn't parallel park.

Unfortunately, I couldn't ride it to work today. I have an engagement right after work and didn't want to leave it sitting outside in the dark. I didn't go in much for accessories yet, just a little Kryptonite cable to keep wrapped around the seatpost for emergencies. Today at lunch I'm going to EMS to pick up a big Kryptonite U-lock, which I might just keep locked to the bike rack in front of my office building, as I'll be keeping it inside at home. Oh, and I should probably think about buying a helmet.

We just got new bikes too, and we're intending to get a lot of use out of them!

Nice... as soon as K. saw mine, she decided she has to get a new one too.

Hooray for bikes! I may buy mine this weekend.

Definitely buy a helmet! And use *both* the cable and the U-Lock. I see too many thefts where I work, where thieves have used a crowbar to jimmy through the lock.

U-lock around the rear wheel? Not the front wheel?

Definitely. At this point I'm happy to go a block out of my way to avoid riding parallel to trolley tracks.

Locks are great, but if there's ANY way you can take your bike inside and into your office I'd recommend that. I used to lock mine in the boiler room at work.

I should talk to the security guard about that.

Thanks, I have in fact been debating just what percentage of the bike's price I'm willing to pay on securing it.

I'm glad you and your bike have found one another. I second or third the immediate purchase of a helmet, so as to keep all those precious thoughts of yours from spilling out onto the gritty streets of Philadephia.

But what if the head injury spurs even more precious thoughts!

Get a helmet.

As much as I look forward to your bike porn, I'm finding these pseudo-Grecians quite nice in the meantime.

I just got my first bike since college last fall. Is amazing how easily it came back. I picked up a single speed 29" mountain bike but learned that single speed in the mountains isn't the easiest thing in the world. Added on a nine speed gear set to the rear wheel and is now much more fun to ride.

RahRahRah! I love my bike. Buy a Kryptonite U lock and the cable. U around the frame, back tire and post or whatever. Weave the cable (I have the kind with two loops@ each end) around the frame and through the front tire, around the post or whatever and the U lock. Make it so the U doesn't flip around easily. I also lock it so the keyhole is down and somewhat inaccessible. It was a pain @ first, but now it's 2nd nature. And much less painful then shopping for a new bike.

Yes to helmet. It won't help you if you're hit by a car, it does help from falling (hit or not). It's the vertical distance that does the damage, not just the horizontal speed. Look @ this way: Can you crack or break your finger/arm/leg and still live a pretty full life? sure. Can you crack your skull and live a full life? Maybe, but it'll for sure be a hell of lot more serious than *any* other bone.nn Helmet becomes 2nd nature too. Get a really good ventilated one and a "dew" rag for sweat or when it's a bit cold. Makes a big difference. If/when your helmet takes a serious hit, replace it. And replace it every 5yrs anyway. Sunlight degrades the plastic/styrofoam.

enjoy it!
