James Bond (possible spoilers for Quantum of Solace)
Well, Quantum of Solace was mediocre. The opening car chase was so jumpy that I had trouble figuring out what was going on. Tracking down the evil criminal organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E., er.. I mean Quantum, was pretty interesting, but the two bad guys focused on were completely forgettable and their big scheme was probably the least nail-biting fiendish plot I've ever witnessed. Hell, I'm not even so sure it was against the law.

Of the two Bond girls, one felt amateurishly shoehorned into the story and the other, while kind of cool, was such damaged goods emotionally that even James didn't seem turned on by her. The big battle at the end was pretty hard to swallow given what an amazing hand-to-hand fighter they'd already shown Bond to be. And the most interesting plot thread of all, about who actually betrayed James in the last film, was rendered in such a muddled, confusing fashion that I was left scratching my head until K. explained it to me.

Daniel Craig is still great in the role though and I'm sure he'll do a fine job when they give him a better script. Fortunately I happened to catch the sleep-inducing Live and Let Die this weekend, which is at best a minor footnote in the history of blaxploitation flicks, and helped me keep in mind how bad a really bad Bond film can be.

ETA: And where was my Star Trek trailer!?!?!

When was the last time you saw it? Because I remembered it as better than it actually was. I swear, if it wasn't for Paul McCartney and the guy from the 7-Up commercials, it would have been a total snooze.

Sorry man, though it has boring moments, the mere fact that it's a half-assed combo of blaxpo tropes and Bond ones makes it automatically entertaining.

Was that actually a hotel? I got the impression it was some sort of compound for crazy dictator followers, so it made perfect sense to me that it would be stupidly engineered with little regard for human life.

That movie makes me think of 7-UP.

The opening car chase made me mildly nauseous.

We were not impressed by the Star Trek trailer. We watched it again online last night and continue to be "eh" about it. celendis is especially dubious of the Enterprise in it. Speaking of him, I need to get awake status. It's about time for him to be awake now for us to spend a few more hours doing nothing together before he returns to the land of Starbucks that do not close at 9 PM.

Spot on. But what big battle at the end? Was there a big battle at the end? I guess I've already started forgetting it.

"Hell, I'm not even so sure it was against the law." This is a good point, and one that made me chortle.

Was there a big battle at the end?

Oh, yeah, I forgot how long the movie went on after that fight. I mean the fight scene between that lead baddie and Bond right before everything went boom.
