K. and I watched David Mamet's Redbelt the other night. It stars the great Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity, Kinky Boots, Talk to Me) as jiu-jitsu instructor Mike Terry whose dedication to behaving honorably gets him in to no end of trouble, especially when there are plenty of unscrupulous Mamet characters around to manipulate him. It's basically a modern take on Kurosawa's samurai films and their film noir cousins.

I thought it was mostly excellent, but for the first time I can think of, I found myself wishing for more exposition. Maybe all the twists and turns made sense, but I can't say for sure since so much of the machinations happen off-camera.

Alice Braga (City of God) gives a great performance as Terry's long-suffering wife and Emily Mortimer does well as a sort of anti-femme fatale. Tim Allen gives a surprisingly moody performance as an aging movie star. And of course it's got a handful of the Mamet regulars: Rickey Jay, David Paymer, Rebecca Pidgeon, and Joe Mantegna.
