The other night, K. and I watched the record-breaking Bollywood film Om Shanti Om. It stars Indian superstar Shahrukh Khan (who's starred in like 50 films in the past ten years) and gorgeous model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone. The plot follows a struggling actor in 1970s Bollywood who ends up getting everything he's dreamed of, just not when or how he wanted them. The romance was sugary sweet, the comedy silly and fun, the drama pure soap opera, and the music so super catchy that I didn't even mind when one of the musical numbers stretched on for something like ten minutes. The costumes and sets were pretty great as well. It probably would have been even more enjoyable if I could have caught all the little references and in-jokes to the Bollywood films of yesteryear, but it still works just fine without knowing them.
