superhero bonanza
I can't even remember another year when there were so many big budget popcorn movies I was so looking forward to. Next week is Iron Man with the perfect casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Then the week after that the Wachowski siblings toss aside the darkness and gloom of the Matrix trilogy for an eye-poppingly colorful, more-or-less live-action take on Speed Racer that appears gleefully unembarrassed by its source material. Then in mid-June, it's the Incredible Hulk which promises to actually be entertaining this time around. And in July, maestro Guillermo Del Toro treats us to Hellboy II: The Golden Army. And then Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins sequel Dark Knight.

That should be enough superheroics to keep my head spinning for the rest of the year, but if they somehow aren't enough to satisfy me, there's also the less exciting Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Prince Caspian, Get Smart, Hancock, and Wanted.

Eh, I'm not terribly interested in The Incredible Hulk. I though Ang Lee's version was just fine, thankyouverymuch.

Still, there's a lot of freakin' movies I'd like to see and no time or money to do it. The wife and I haven't even gotten to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall yet!

I blame the Bush administration. History will show that I''m right.

Given that we missed Superbad and this sounds like it's just as good, we've been planning to catch it.

If you can find it, sometime in the '80s a set of two new Speed Racer cartoons were released on one VHS tape.

I remembered the show as a kid (I'm pretty damned old) but the person I watched it with had never seen it before.

We both laughed about as hard as you can at a comedy. Okay, we were pretty drunk. But it was a brilliant bit of self-parody.

Thanks to the internet, I now have proof of another Japanimation show that everyone thought I had to be making up: 8 Man! Who fought crime using -- MAGIC CIGARETTES. Man, it still sounds like bullshit.

I love Get Smart. I am totally afraid they are going to fuck up its particular sense of humor.

Yeah, I have a great deal of faith in Steve Carrell, but am still dreading that a little.
