Best of 2007: Round One, Match Four (a hopefully not too spoilery review of Persona)
K. and I watched Ingmar Bergman's Persona the other night. Pretty much the epitome of the artsy foreign film. Mood-heavy scenes, unexplained and sometimes inexplicable actions, loads of symbolism, and intense dialogue. Not to mention bizarre montage bombardments of things like crucifixtions, sheep being killed, penises, and corpses. When it ended, I wasn't sure if it was a simple story about a nervous breakdown, some kind of extremely subtle horror film, an indictment of modern psychiatry, or something else altogether. Either way, it was definitely super interesting to watch and the two actresses, Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann, were both beautiful and amazing to watch.

wild strawberries is good, but to me, it plays like a bit of a "greatest hits" of bergman's ideas. in other words, it's good, but the story doesn't affect me as much.

through a glass darkly is amazing amazing, but you have to really get into it to love it.

the seventh seal is great for these cold, dreary days. ;)

smiles of a summer night is the fun one - literally, it may be the only fun one. the remarkable thing is how well it is done for essentially being a romantic comedy. furthermore, it feels like bergman, even though he' never been known for lightheartedness.

winter light, shame, the magician, and the virgin spring are all favourites of mine as well.
