Best of 2007: Round One, Match Four (a hopefully not too spoilery review of Persona)
K. and I watched Ingmar Bergman's Persona the other night. Pretty much the epitome of the artsy foreign film. Mood-heavy scenes, unexplained and sometimes inexplicable actions, loads of symbolism, and intense dialogue. Not to mention bizarre montage bombardments of things like crucifixtions, sheep being killed, penises, and corpses. When it ended, I wasn't sure if it was a simple story about a nervous breakdown, some kind of extremely subtle horror film, an indictment of modern psychiatry, or something else altogether. Either way, it was definitely super interesting to watch and the two actresses, Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann, were both beautiful and amazing to watch.

yeah, that's pretty much the height of his mindfuckery. the performances of bibi and liv are eight levels of intense, though. if you're not too familiar with bergman, i could certainly recommend some easier-to-grasp films of his. i've been known to nerd out on him fairly regularly. :)

oh, such a hard choice today! B, C, maybe D?! although after i see that B garnered a lot of votes and C none, i wish i could change my vote to show C some love. oh well!

I was thinking Wild Strawberries next, but please recommend away.

Well, there's always Seventh Seal, but I think Wild Strawberries if better. Seventh Seal has some powerful images and lines, but WS is much more cohesive.

I need to see Smiles of a Summer Night, though...

I saw Seventh Seal back in college, but I reckon I could stand to see it again as an adult.

wild strawberries is good, but to me, it plays like a bit of a "greatest hits" of bergman's ideas. in other words, it's good, but the story doesn't affect me as much.

through a glass darkly is amazing amazing, but you have to really get into it to love it.

the seventh seal is great for these cold, dreary days. ;)

smiles of a summer night is the fun one - literally, it may be the only fun one. the remarkable thing is how well it is done for essentially being a romantic comedy. furthermore, it feels like bergman, even though he' never been known for lightheartedness.

winter light, shame, the magician, and the virgin spring are all favourites of mine as well.

I'd like to vote again for (B) and give a special damn-that's-a-nice-ass to (C) as well.

My fiance has a (B) body, maybe I'm just biased. :)

Think of Persona as an Ur-Fight Club and it all makes sense.

Oddly enough we just re-watched Fight Club on saturday night, so that possibility did occur to me, but I was afraid I was reaching.

the voyeur in me says C and it was a difficult choice, but the lover of the curve screams at me to choose B.. this one was the most difficult choice so far

I knew this would be a landslide for B.

I didn't expect it to be quite this severe.

B definetely.

What did you think of Terminator? I was the anonymous person that convinced himself last week to watch it. Pilot I thought was really good. The second night was eh. Maybe it was the mood I was in. It's funny but Summer Glau is kind of playing the exact same character she did on Firefly. The only difference is she is not having random weird visions and babbling nonsense half the time.

Re: B.
I'm not sure Summer Glau has a lot of range as an actress, but I like what little she does do. I'd actually be up for Cameron to get some head injury that makes her act even more like River Tam.

Oh, and I definitely agree that the second episode was fairly blah.
