unmotivated in the extreme
Between the gloomy weather, getting over a cold, film festival exhaustion, and annoyance with my family, I seem to have sunken into either a malaise or a funk. I'd prefer to think of it as a funk, because then my mind can drift off a little to imagine a fat baseline, a hammond organ and a popping horn section.

Either way though, I have to force myself to start writing again. I haven't really done anything on the book for a couple of weeks and I can feel my will to write decaying like a sticky, hollow tooth in the back of my mouth.

Oh no, can I help you? I'm reading this very inspirational book...

Thanks, P! I'll let you know if I think of anything.

What's the book? Writing Down the Bones?

It's Annie Lamott's Bird By Bird, I love it so much. I have Writing Down The Bones, and I like it too. But WDTB is so sort of holy, Annie Lamott is just fucking funny--

I just read Bird by Bird a few months ago. A lot of great stuff in there, although I had to read it short doses or the old touchy-feelie hippie stuff got to be too much for me.

We want the funk! Give up the funk!

(Parliament cures all ills)

It's true, but I think I'm craving the Ohio Players even more than Parliament.

I just started writing a screenplay, in hopes of getting out of my submission/rejection funk. It's working already! It's nice to have something new to be excited about.

Maybe it would be fun for you to try out a different medium or genre or something? Even if it winds up being an abortive effort, it can help get the creative juices flowing (if I may use that rather gross cliche).

I have some giant robot stories that I can work on when I get stuck. But I'm a little afraid to shift gears at the moment.

Good luck on the screenplay!

But if it is malaise the rest of us can giggle thinking of you in French beret with a funny little French moustache. And a tight shirt with really big black and white stripes.
