Nanoween
For those of us who have tried our hands at it in the past, Halloween is not just All Hallow's Eve anymore. Now it's also Nanowrimo Eve. Thus far, National Novel Writing Month has been a technical failure for me. I've never come close to the 100,000 50,000 word goal. When I free myself to write unencumbered, I write stuff I can't even stand to look at, let alone re-write. No, I've had to accept the fact that I'm a slow writer (you know... assuming I'm a writer at all).

But Nanowrimo can still be useful to me. Mostly as a motivational tool. Afterall the novel that I'm currently working got it's first chapter written during last year's Nanowrimo. Even though that's about as far as it went until a couple months ago when I picked it up again. It's also nice to know that there are lots of others of you going through something like what I am.

So I'm been trying to figure out what use I'm going to make of Nanowrimo this time around. And I think I've got it. I'm going to try to stop writing exclusively at the bar, which is the pattern I've fallen into lately. I'm not really all that worried about becoming a drunk or the few extra pounds I've put on from the beer-induced writing. But I am worried about becoming superstitious. I should be disciplined enough to write at home (despite lots of potential electronic distractions). And I may have enough confidence going (we'll see) to write without dulling my self-hatred with booze first.

So, that's my plan for Nanowrimo. I'm going to keep up my current output while trying to break my pattern.

So, Happy Nanoween, everybody, and to those of you making the noble effort, best of luck!

Dulling self-hatred with booze: it's a recipe for success!

psst... it's only 50K.

What? 50? Not 100? That's crazy talk... you can't call THAT a novel.
doNUT!donutgirl on October 31st, 2006 03:04 pm (UTC)
A good length for a novel is between 70K and 85K. 100K starts to look seriously bloated, unless you're working on a War and Peace style epic.

The Nano folks picked 50K deliberately for being difficult but doable... But yeah, even winning nanos will certainly need to be expanded. Mine is around 82K right now.

Do you know about the "text stats" function on Amazon? I'm not sure how reliable it is, but it's a good way to get a general idea of how long your favorite books are.

I suspect my book will be pretty short. I'm definitely not a fan of filler.

I haven't heard about the text stats feature? How do I do that?
doNUT!donutgirl on October 31st, 2006 03:18 pm (UTC)
Just go to the amazon page of any book that has the "search inside" function available. When you hover over the book cover, a window will pop up with vatious options to "explore" inside the book. One of those is text stats. Among other info, it gives the supposed total word count of the book.

I say supposed because, having surfed around, I'm not always sure I believe them.

Hey, that's pretty neat.

Hmmm.... Zelazny's "Lord of Light" has 95,408 words and DeLillo's "Great Jones Street" has 65,254 words, so I figure mine should be about 80,000 words. Yay, I have an arbitrary goal! Now I can make one of those little progress meters that some writers put on their blogs.

I meant to ask you and I forgot --what is declan?

I start my third draft tomorrow! That means I have to do this eight hundred pounds of laundry today...

The Declan tag refers back to the dark days of Decemeber 2003, when I was kidnapped and replaced in my blogging duties by my evil brother Declan whose wicked tastes ran more toward feet than asses.
