Sunshine (slight spoilers)

I saw Sunshine saturday, which I thought was pretty great. Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) directed it from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later). The story takes place 50 years in the future, as our sun is prematurely dying. An international team of astronauts is flying out to the sun on a gigantic bomb that they hope will reignite it.

For the first two-thirds, the film is a fantastic homage to thinky, 70s-style sci-fi like Silent Running and 2001. We experience the desperation of the crew, their exhaustion from their long, claustrophobic journey, and their struggles to do everything they can as the human race's last chance at survival. Cliff Curtis (the father in Whale Rider) is great as the team's psychologist. Michelle Yeoh does a lot with her subtle role as the team's biologist. And Cillian Murphy rocks superhard (as he always does) as the team's timid physicist. Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Troy Garity, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Benedict Wong also star.

For the final third, the film slides a bit too far into contemporary action movie sci-fi, which I think was a mistake, but wasn't enough to ruin it for me.

To be perfectly honest, all it really took was Cillian Murphy stepping out into space in a very glam rock-looking, gold-plated spacesuit for this movie to make me its bitch.
