Watched The History Boys last night. I thought it was very good, although it felt a bit scattered to me because there was no main character. Rather, there were four semi-main characters, none of which were exactly in the spotlight. I'm sure there are a thousand films that do the same thing without bothering me in the slightest, but here I definitely felt my feet losing their grip on what the actual storyline was. I suppose that since the story was somewhat autobiographical for playwright and screenwriter Alan Bennett (who also wrote the screenplay for Prick Up Your Ears), I should assume his character was the primary, although frankly his character was the weakest candidate of the four. I recall hearing they cut about an hour from the play when they converted it to a film. Maybe that hour would have helped me find more secure footing.
