amd: ass monkey

"Maybe I used too many monkeys..."

Thanks to modrobot, I've discovered this fantastic songwriter named Jonathan Coulton. His music is a little folkier than I tend to listen to these days, but I'm totally hooked by the sheer genius of his lyrics and sincerity in their performance. He writes songs about zombies, monkeys, Sasquatch, Freemasons, and the Mandelbrot Set. Other stuff too, of course. A lot of the songs on his site are available for free.

By far my favorite is "Skullcrusher Mountain" about a mad scientist who kidnaps a beautiful woman and tries to make her fall in love with him. (And not just because that's one of the things that happens in my novel either.) I can't get this part out of my head:

I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you
But I get the feeling that you don't like it
What's with all the screaming?
You like monkeys, you like ponies
Maybe you don't like monsters so much
Maybe I used too many monkeys
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Check him out.
