TNP/B&S

Went to see The New Pornographers and Belle & Sebastian on saturday. Two of my favorite bands. Great, great show.

TNP took a little bit to get jumping, but once they started doing some of my favorites from "The Electric Version" I was totally digging it. I was a bit worried that I'd be disappointed in them without Neko Case, but Carl Newman's niece did a really excellent job. Except for the fact that they didn't play "Chump Change," I had no real complaints.

B&S were awesome. Of course they played my two favorites from the new album, "The Blues Are Stil Blue" and "Sukie in the Graveyard." But they also played "She's Losing It," "Judy and the Dream of Horses," Dog on Wheels," "Me and the Major," "I'm a Cuckoo," "If You Find Yourself Caught in Love," and "My Wandering Days Are Over." Oddly though, while lead singer Stuart Murdoch was fabulous as always and possibly even more charming than the last time I saw them, it was guitarist Stevie Jackson who was my favorite by far at this show. Dressed up in a slick suit and dancing like he was in the Kinks, I felt like they'd plucked him right out of the 1960s. Absolutely fun to watch. Plus I never realized it but he sings my all time favorite B&S song "Jonathan David" (which, of course, they also played).

They yesterday, K. and I made what I'm tentatively calling Pina Colada Shrimp. Grilled shrimp and chunks of fresh pineapple in a pineapple curry and coconut milk sauce, over Thai sticky rice. A yummy weekend all around.
