books
So, after three years of living together, the girl and I finally combined our books this weekend. We have 8 or 9 bookcases full, so it was no small task.

For some reason we decided against sorting the books by author or subject, and grouped them by color instead. Yes, by color. It's kind of an arresting sight to see. I'm sure it's going to annoy the hell out of the many librarians who tend to visit us.

What is that on her butt? A bud, a mole, a piece of dirt????

I'm guessing mole.

Mine are entirely alphabetical --except for things that are definitely sets, like self-help books. So I have Jackie Chan's biography next to, like, Chaucer.

Heh... now I can't stop envisioning Jackie Chan in a wacky kung-fu version of The Miller's Tale, fighting his his girlfriend's husband in a bath tub on the roof of their house.

Oh, I almost forgot. A few authors got the special treatment of having all their books together. Lorrie Moore, Philip K. Dick, Michael Moorcock, Margaret Atwood, and Francesca Lia Block. Possibly a few others.

I'll see if I can snap a picture that does it justice....

i once ordered all of my cd's chromatically. black to grey to white, then with good ol' ROYGBIV. looked AWESOME, 1700 cd's worth. couldn't find a damn thing, though. :P

Wow... I couldn't do that with CDs. With them, I'm completely OCD, aphabetical by artist, then chronological by album.

Fortunately, I have a pretty good memory for the colors of book spines, so I think this system might actually be vaguely efficient. Time will tell...
micah: devil girllaerm on April 18th, 2006 02:20 pm (UTC)
normally i use the exact same system - though there are a few labels that i collect and all of their spines have a consistent appearance, so i lump those together, because it looks cooler. anyways, i did that to try and break out of my ocd shell a bit...

I've actually heard of a couple of libraries/bookstores organized that way. Sounds more manageable for a small collection than a large one. I may talk to the Baroness about doing this with our books.

As for the picture, we like.

Wow, I'd love to see a whole library organized that way!

Melvil Dewey would not be amused.

By color, really? :)
So, how do you find a book you want to read? :)
Diary of an Ass Monkey: amd: aqua chairassmonkeydiary on April 18th, 2006 02:31 pm (UTC)
After working in bookstores for a number of years, I developed an uncanny knack for remembering book spines. So, I can pretty easilly just scan the properly colored shelves.
Porcupunkvyk13 on April 18th, 2006 02:33 pm (UTC)
Good point... but it would still probably drive me nuts! LOL
I had mine separated into "genres/topics" and within each alphabetical by author... though, granted, we need to completely replace our bookshelves and once that happens, I'll change it again LOL

I LOVE it!

it rings of High Fidelity when Cusack is arranging and resorting his vinyl collection in an "autobiographical" manner...

"so if I want to listen to Fleetwood Mac Rumors, I need to remember it's in the Fall '88 pile where I bought it for someone but didn't give it to them for personal reasons..."

"no WAY!"

I arrange mine in descending size, from the tallest to the shortest or else it bugs me to look at them. :P

Except for the shelf of Dover paperback cheapies that I arrange by color into a nifty little rainbow, because they are all the same size anyway. :P
