film festival begins to sputter to a close...

Well, after 33 films, I finally overdosed and played hooky from the festival yesterday. Of course that also might have had something to do with my girl getting back into town after a week away. Unfortunately, that meant missing "Tokyo Zombie," which I truly regret. I'll get back into the saddle today though, I think.

A few random reviews:

Evil: This is probably the first zombie movie ever to come out of Greece. It reminded me a lot of classic, 70s-era, low budget American horror films, with a few exceptions: a soundtrack of crazy Greek club music, actresses laughing during the fight scenes, hilariously unnecessary split screens, and an abundance of foot fetishism.

Kinky Boots: This exceptional British film will be going into at least limited release. It's got Nick Frost from "Shaun of the Dead" and the guy who played the Operative in "Serenity." I don't want to give away the plot, but it's a lot of fun.

The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes: I love the Brothers Quay. Their stop-motion animation work is easily the most beautiful I've ever seen. This, however, is their second live-action film. A lot of our audience didn't appreciate their particular blend of surreal, pretentious brain candy and walked out during the show, but I thought it was great. It was about a piano tuner who is summoned to a mysterious castle to repair several musical automatons (provided by classic Quay animation techniques) for a mysterious doctor.
