Film Festival so far...

Today's DAY FOUR of the festival.

No time to write them all up, but here are some of the best that I've seen so far:

The Descent: Fantastic horror film about a group of old friends, each of them to varying degrees adventure sportswomen (y'know... whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, etc), get together for a spelunking trip. Needless to say, things go terribly, terribly wrong once they're in the caves. Some of the thrills and scares in this film were so intense that the whole theatre jolted in shock. My adrenaline was thoroughly expended by it.

District 13: In Paris of the near future, the government has given up on its poorest citizens, withdrawing the police and just walling them in. Fortunately, they still have Leito, the most unbelievable ass kicker in French history. This is one of the funnest, most stunt-tastic action adventure movies I've ever seen. The breaks in the action of this taut rollercoaster ride are few and brief, hardly even enough time for you to catch your breath.

The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai: This mildly disturbing Japanese sex comedy is definitely the most bizarre anti-war film I've ever seen, and probably one of the strangest films period. The main character is a prostitute that becomes super intelligent after being shot in the head. Her nemesis: George Bush's disembodied finger, which flies around saying things like "I do not need UN approval to invade your vagina!"

This Film Not Yet Rated: I'm not usually a big fan of documentaries, but this one about the ultra-secretive MPAA is fantastic. If you've ever wondered how depicting bloodless killing in films gets you a PG-13 rating while showing a woman actually enjoying sex is likely to get you a profit-killing NC-17 or higher rating, then check this out. It's lively and engaging.
