Saturday, I saw Happy Endings at the arthouse. It was pretty good. It was kind of a mess, but I found myself carried along by it rather well in spite of that. The best storyline involved Maggie Gyllenhaal becoming the singer for a bar band. Her singing was pretty terrific. Her voice reminded me a lot of Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis. Plus, she's a skilled enough actress that she can project the emotional moments of a song, without her singing suffering or going too far over the top.
Then on Sunday, I saw The Island. I thought it was a lot of fun. Mostly, it was 70s-style concept sci-fi, which I love, but with some wild and crazy chase scenes thrown in to keep the kids happy.
