wayback wednesday: eagle vs. shark
Last night, K. and I watched the amusing New Zealand film Eagle vs. Shark, which I missed at the Philly film festival last year. It's a quirky, low-key comedy about childlike adults, somewhat reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite, but with more heart and fewer catch phrases. The main character is Lily, a socially-awkward fast food employee with a big old crush on Jarod, a mullet-sporting electronics store geek played by Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. There are a few odd animated portions of the film and the soundtrack features lots of light, fluffy indie pop from Phoenix Foundation, M. Ward, and Devendra Banhart.

I pondered whether I might like this, but I have to say comparing it to Napoleon Dynamite gives me pause. I just did not get that film and neither did my wife.

Yet my brother-in-law and both my sisters-in-law loved it so much that they used to quote it all the time.

Personally, I think any film that's supposed to be about outsiders triumphing but becomes insanely popular with the, well, popular kids has missed the point.

But, getting back to the point, a New Zealand take on it would actually probably work. New Zealand can make any concept awesome. Just look at Black Sheep.

Yeah, it's definitely a different movie than Napoleon Dynamite, but probably in the same genre of comedy based on characters having a lack of self-awareness or social graces.

I get what you're saying. I just went off on a tangent, as I often do...

Oh man, they are hot! That's what real women look like.

Sigh.

Now days, they're all likely in their 80's.
