The Cape
In our latest cheap ass vacation scheme, we're driving up to Cape Cod next week where some friends are lending us their off-season beach rental. We're going to stop in Newport at least long enough to do the Cliff Walk (maybe we'll hit that coming and going) and we're planning a day trip into Boston since I've never been there. We'll also spend some time visiting the people who are lending the house of course. Other than that, I'm not really sure what we'll get up to. Probably eat some clam chowder and watch some Degrassi: The Next Generation on dvd. Hopefully there's a tv in the beachhouse. Oh, we might go to Edward Gorey's house.

Anyone have recommendations of other things to do in Cape Cod?

Yeah, it's a fun town. Expensive, but fun. Have you ever eaten at the Cheeky Monkey there? It's pretty groovy.

Sorry to tell you this, but the Cheeky Monkey has been closed down. The owners had to sell it because they couldn't afford to keep running it. It's now called Christie's.

So sad! I wonder what they did with all the old monkey paintings. I would totally love to snatch them up in an auction!

My friend used to bartend there. I can ask her if she knows anything about them and let you know.

Awesome! You rock!

I talked to my friend about the monkey paintings and here's her response:

Cheeky's been closed for nearly a year now and already opened as Christies. There's a new cheeky opened in Narragansett. In Feb they auctioned off everything inside the building and I believe that the owner kept the paintings for himself unless he donated them to the new Cheeky which I haven't been to yet.

Either way, there's no way of anyone getting their hands on them. You could contact the artists and commission more however.

Sorry.

No worries. Thanks for checking.

I just might check out the new one if I even make my way up there again.

Heh, I thought of you cause there was a store in Providence that seemed to specialize in those toe socks.

Any particular kind of stuff you'd like to check out -- specific cuisines, literary history, scenic lookouts, specific collectibles? (Throwing random things out here, insert your own interests there and imagine I'm terribly clever.)

I lived in Worcester County (central Mass) for several years and we frequently visited the Cape, including two weeks near Wellfleet every summer.

Excellent! Being a foodie, I'm probably most interested in any restaurants you thought were great (we eat everything). Maybe scenic vistas too.

Too bad the stars weren't aligned-- I'm planning on going to Boston and Newport in several months.

I hear there's good lobster roll to be had in Newport. I've never been, so I don't know for sure.

Have a great vacation!

Heh... I love lobster, but I feel no need to soak it in mayonaise, so I generally avoid the lobster roll. However, we heartily recommend the Quahog Company in Newport for a good meal. Sumo Sushi is also good.

You should go to Provincetown, if for no other reason than the widely available gay sex. Honestly, the more I think about, the more I realize there aren't a lot of destinations on Cape Cod. Just find a nice beach.

You're telling me. K. & I drove into P-Town a couple and left as 2/3rds of a threesome.

Wow, you really know how to vacate! My vacations mostly involve looking at stuff and eating ice cream.

Oh, we ate ice cream too.

Heh... no, just the Buddha himself.
