the inevitable wednesday night television talk ("Lost" spoilers in paragraph three)
Damn, I couldn't believe the way they all ganged up on my girl Natasha last night on Next Top Model. Well, ok, I could, but still. As hilarious as I find her power of positive thinking, it so clearly works for her most of the time. (Maybe I should try it sometime instead of investing all of my energy into the power of cynical thinking.) If the judges had kicked her off, I might have been done with the show. I just hope she has time to recover before the finale.

American Idol has me worried now. I can hardly believe they kicked off LaKisha. Clearly she and Melinda split the vote of the people who actually care about singing ability. I just hope Melinda (who I prefer over LaKisha just because of her showmanship) can survive against her more fashionable-looking opponents.

And then there's Lost. Not sure why that island needs a haunted house on top of everything else it has going on, but I can't say it really bothered me. I think the zanier they get the better. Ben's backstory was pretty interesting. I wonder how long the island will let Locke be dead before it it gives us Zombie Locke? (Bonus: Batmanuel!!!)

Is that the first time you've noticed Bat-Manuel? He's been on all season.

There's no way Locke is actually dead. We've already seen how fast the island heals him, and he's one of the most interesting characters on the show.

In any case, I really enjoyed Ben's back story and I think the show is finally moving again, which is good.

For some reason I hadn't noticed him until last night and then it was all I could think of when he was on screen.

I definitely agree about Locke. Especially since the ghost/psychic presence/soul of the island/stranded space alien/devil/whathaveyou speaks to him.
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 01:52 pm (UTC)
My wife pointed that out as soon as he showed up. So we've been saying "No, Bat Manuel!" ever since anytime he shows up or does something naughty.

I also loved that Ben's dad is Victor Lazlo/Uncle Rico. I love Jon Gries, it was good seeing him work again.

I am pretty confident the show would lose a lot of its remaining viewers if they killed Locke. I'm less confident that the same would happen if they killed Jack, Sawyer, Sayid, Kate, Jin, Sun, Hurley or the British runt who's name is escaping me right now.

Wow, I totally failed to recognize Uncle Rico...
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 01:59 pm (UTC)
I'm a fanatic fan of a bunch of character actors, and Gries is one of them. I loved his work in the 80s playing quirky weirdos (Real Genius, Fright Night II, The Monster Squad all come to mind) and it's good to see him working again.
The Mud Puppy: Ouch!mudpuppy83 on May 10th, 2007 02:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, see I'd be fine with Locke dead. I used to think he was an awesome character, and then he became a whiny, self-centered psychopath like Jack. Even though I did like him beating up the one-eyed Russian.

Now, Sawyer and Sayid I definitely would not want to see go, nor Hurley. I've pretty much written Charlie off as inevitable.
Diary of an Ass Monkey: amd: Glen Barr assmonkeydiary on May 10th, 2007 02:09 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I would miss Sawyer. I'm not sure if I'd miss Sayid, but only because they haven't let him do anything lately.
The Mud Puppy: Kong vs. Rex 2005mudpuppy83 on May 10th, 2007 02:24 pm (UTC)
That is definitely true. He's one of the most complex characters on the show and he's been given almost nothing to do.
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 02:26 pm (UTC)
See they could kill Sawyer-or as I like to say whenever he shows up "MY NAME IS SSSSSAAAAAAAWWWWWYYYYEEERRRR!" ala Kid Rock-and I wouldn't give a crap. He has always annoyed me. Sayid I still like, but they've misused him quite a bit lately and, as you say, he doesn't get to do much anymore.

I completely disagree about Jack and Locke, but what do I know.
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 02:28 pm (UTC)
The thing I do find is that whenever I start to really dislike a character or the way they've been handling them lately, they turn around and give them a half way decent ep. I'm really sick of Desmond though.
The Mud Puppy: Oh Shit...mudpuppy83 on May 10th, 2007 02:05 pm (UTC)
Sad thing is, I still remember him as the Cuban guy from Suddenly Susan.

...

I'll show myself out.

Hehe... you loooooooove Brooke Shields.

I will admit to liking the show more than I really should have. However, I didn't watch after Eric Idle joined the cast. Normally you would think adding Eric Idle might be a step up, but the show was already dying by that point.

Was James Spader on that show at one point or am I totally imagining that?
The Mud Puppy: Exposedmudpuppy83 on May 10th, 2007 02:34 pm (UTC)
I don't actually know. I don't recall him, but anything is possible.
Diary of an Ass Monkey: amd: meditatingassmonkeydiary on May 10th, 2007 02:36 pm (UTC)
Oi! it was Judd Nelson I was thinking of. Not James Spader. They'll be kicking me out of the fanclub for that one....

Locke was being suck a jerk in last night's episode, I'm glad Ben plugged him.

The Killing Fields style pit was pretty odd. They never explained what went on during the 10-15 year gap between when Ben was a kid and an adult.
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 01:49 pm (UTC)
They gotta leave something for the next three seasons, right?

As far as Locke being a jerk, as much as I like the Russian guy (he's the only Other I can stand) it was satisfying to see someone force Ben's hand. Now if they could just kill him and move on to more interesting things. Though I'm almost at the point where I can stand him.

"They gotta leave something for the next three seasons, right?"

Smoke monster, anyone?
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 01:57 pm (UTC)
Honestly, if you really expect that they will be able to answer ever question they've created, I think you will be seriously disappointed. I will cut them some slack on the explanations until the show is over though.
Diary of an Ass Monkey: amd: green waitressassmonkeydiary on May 10th, 2007 02:00 pm (UTC)
In the end, they'll explain everything away with the magic word "Nanomachines!"

I was pretty impressed by how the jungle hadn't reclaimed that mass grave in fifteen years depsite being full of perfectly good human fertilizer. Maybe that gas was some kind of super weedkiller?

I guess Ben spent those fifteen years trying to create his own version of the Dharma initiative. But why? Because Jacob made him do it?
Professor Mortis: Timprofessormortis on May 10th, 2007 01:57 pm (UTC)
Well, his dad's body wasn't reclaimed either, right? Maybe the gas did have some sort of anti-life equation effect.

Hard to say with Ben. There's lots of questions-why did the Dharma Initiative keep dropping in food and supplies, who are the natives of the Island (I somewhat believe they are just a splinter group from Dharma or a similar earlier group, but hard to say), why did the Dharma allow them to keep using the subs, etc.

I wanted them to be the descendents of pirates, but Batmanuel was too civilized and polite for that.
Sorry I missed that picnicdickmalone on May 10th, 2007 02:29 pm (UTC)
I don't watch Lost, but I might if Batmanuel's on it.
